Killing Education

The Odense Zoo in central Denmark says a healthy young female lion was put down nine months ago because the zoo had too many felines. It said the animal, which has since been kept in a freezer, will be dissected Thursday to coincide with the schools' fall break.
Zookeeper Michael Wallberg Soerensen said the Odense Zoo, 170 kilometers (105 miles) west of Copenhagen, has performed public dissections for 20 years. He says they are "not for entertainment" but are educational.

Educational? You are educating in the fact that KILLING a healthy animal is OK!!!

That lion is dead ONLY because she was born/bread/lived in captivity!!!

That is HER ONLY SIN, the ONLY REAL REASON why that animal is dead in the first place. After that you can do whatever you want with the corpse, the ISSUE here is that YOU KILLED HER, only because she was a CAPTIVE.

The only reason why that living, sentient being is dead was because YOU kept her there, because she could not survive in the wild since she was born in captivity, because you meant to keep her there for ECONOMICAL GAIN.

This is NOT educational. This is educating people into thinking that it is OK to keep animals caged, to kill them when it is most convenient to YOU and on top of it to perform a necropsy with the excuse that it is "educational".

NO. NEVER.

You are educating people in the idea that it is OK to kill and dissect a healthy young animal just for MONEY.

While in another part of the world, lion's number are dramatically declining.

PAY FOR HER RE-INTRODUCTION IN THE WILD.

That will be educational. But of course... it will only mean expenses and no income.

Ditte Tholstrup Uhm... Laura... you do know that animals die in the nature too, right? Many cubs die because a new lion comes to the pride and kills them in order to make room for their own cubs. Lions and lionesses die from accidents during hunting; they might get gored by another animal or kicked. Maybe they get taken by a crocodile while trying to drink. We cannot say for sure if she would have died in the nature or not, but we cannot at all say that she wouldn't either, so no, her "sin" was not to be born in captivity. Saying so is like saying that someone got hit by a car because they were born in a certain city; it doesn't work like that.
Does this make it okay to put a healthy lion down? Not necessarily, but they did try to rehome her, since she was causing trouble (attacking younger cubs, starting fights etc.). They did not put her down because they wanted to dissect her (if so then she wouldn't have been in a freezer for 9 months following being put down), yet after having done it they might as well use her to educate people. Just because you don't think it's a good idea doesn't mean it isn't overall a good idea to educate adults and children alike on how animals are.

Laura Paglia The difference here, Dite, is that the curator at that zoo was THE SOLE RESPONSIBLE for the death of that living being. NOT another lion, NOT any accident/disease/activity that NATURALLY control animal population.
That INDIVIDUAL was killed ONLY because she was in a zoo.
Why was she "causing trouble"? Once again, because she was KEPT IN CAPTIVITY. That again, to me, is the ONLY reason why she is now dead. They tried to relocate her? What about re-inserting her in the wild??? Because that, instead of giving income for SELLING her to another PRISON, would mean spending a lot of money.
As said, I don't really give a blip about what they do with her corpse, but carrying out a necropsy under the excuse that it's "educational" means not only to justify the KILLING, but even before that to justify the CAPTIVITY of that INDIVIDUAL.
I don't agree with the basic idea of a zoo in the first place, so I won't agree with anything that comes as a cosequence of keeping wild animals in captivity, or any of their descendents. What is the difference between a zoo and SeaWorld? Both exist EXCLUSIVELY for economical gain. Maybe not even for the curators nor the companies/public offices that take care of the zoos themselves, but wild trade (even "legal") is one of the MOST LUCRATIVE BUSINESSES in the world. No thank you, not for me.

I very much suggest supporting this kind of associations instead, just because I AM VERY FAMILIAR with what a linon's life in the wild is.
